A Guide to Spontaneous Travel

For now, the days of planning trips a year in advance are on hold, meaning you can get up and go whenever you want, with nothing but the open road as your guide!

While type-A personalities may cringe at having to wing it (but my itinerary), not having a set plan is exhilarating for the more laidback traveler (the world is truly my oyster).

Since a certain degree of flexibility is necessary in these current times, the type As among us may just have to learn to slightly adjust their travel style for the time being.

That said, there are some tried and true ways that will help you relinquish just a little control, go with the flow, and truly enjoy the journey.

Tips for Last-Minute Travel:

  1. You Can Still (Kind of) Plan. Lack of planning doesn’t mean a lack of research. You’re still doing both—you’re just doing them on the fly. For instance, it’s ok to look up what the weather’s like where you’re going, what the main attractions are, or to book at least your first night’s stay before you arrive. And with smartphones, spur-of-the-moment research has never been easier.

  1. Have a Budget. Depending on your travel style, last minute bookings can sometimes turn out to be more costly. However, this way of travel can also be much more budget-friendly since you can often score last minute deals. Determining what your cap is ahead of time helps give the planner some peace of mind knowing that even if they’re blowing off making plans, they’re not blowing their budget in the process.

  1. Adjust Your Expectations. You read that right. The fewer expectations you have, the more room you leave for spontaneity, which is where the magic happens! That said, be completely honest with yourself about what you hope to get out of your trip. If there’s something you really want to go do and see in your destination, then absolutely do it. Balance is key.
